Data Sovereignty is a hot topic. As more and more of our lives are lived online and we are getting used to this digitalised world, the ability to control our data becomes more important than ever before. Do you want to know your data is stored in a safe and secure place? Data sovereignty is the idea that data should be stored and processed within the borders of the country in which it was collected.

The current legislation has been in place for 20 years, but now the European Commission has two renewed legislative initiatives to improve digital services within the EU. The Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA). It didn’t just happen overnight; they presented the proposals in December 2020, and the political agreement followed on 25 March 2022 (DMA) and 23 April 2022 (DSA). The European Commission called it ‘an ambitious reform of the digital space, a comprehensive set of new rules for all digital services, including social media and other online platforms operating in the EU’.
